Dry forest and savanna in West Bali National Park, looking west towards the mountains of Java

West Bali National Park

Savanna, monsoon forest and the rarest bird in Bali

Taman Nasional Bali Barat protects the far western tip of Bali: tens of thousands of hectares of dry savanna, monsoon and rain forest, mangroves, beaches and coral reefs, including Menjangan Island. It is the least-visited corner of the island and one of its wildest.

The park is the last wild home of the Bali starling (jalak Bali), a snow-white bird with bright blue eye patches that is the island’s only endemic bird and among the rarest birds in the world. A breeding and release programme has brought it back from the brink. Javan rusa deer, long-tailed macaques, black langurs, monitor lizards, hornbills and many water birds are much easier to see.

Top things to do at West Bali National Park

Take a guided trek

Walks inside the park require a licensed guide and a permit, arranged at the park offices at Labuan Lalang or at Cekik near Gilimanuk, or through a guided safari tour.

Go birdwatching

Early morning is best. A specialist birding guide knows where the Bali starling and other species feed.

Paddle the mangroves

Kayak the sheltered channels of Banyuwedang Bay and Teluk Terima, rich in herons, kingfishers and crabs.

Visit the temples of the park

Pura Segara Rupek, on the coast facing Java, and Pura Jayaprana near Teluk Terima are tied to local legends and pilgrimages.

Insider tips

  • Bring water, a hat and insect repellent; the savanna is hot and exposed by late morning.
  • Fees and permit rules change — check at the park office or with your guide.
  • The dry season (around May to October) is best for spotting wildlife, when the forest thins out.
