Where to Stay in Pemuteran

Beachfront gardens on the reef, or a hideaway inside the national park. Here is where to sleep.

Pemuteran has a surprisingly good range of places to stay for such a small village, from family homestays to some of the most secluded resorts in Bali. The decision comes down to two things: whether you want to walk to restaurants and snorkel off the beach, or be as close as possible to Menjangan Island and the national park.

Pemuteran bay has the widest choice: garden resorts and villas along the beach — several of them right in front of the Biorock reef — plus dive lodges and guesthouses along the main road. The Menjangan side, 10–20 minutes west at Banyuwedang, Teluk Terima and Labuan Lalang, has a handful of quiet, higher-end retreats in and around West Bali National Park, closest to the boats for the island.

How to choose

  • First time, want to snorkel from the beach? A resort in the middle of Pemuteran bay, in front of the Biorock reef.
  • Diving every day? A dive lodge in the village, with the dive centre on site and early boats.
  • Honeymoon or a real escape? A private-pool villa in Pemuteran, or a resort inside the national park.
  • On a budget? Homestays and guesthouses on the village side of the main road are much cheaper than beachfront rooms, and the sea is a few minutes’ walk away.

Booking tips

  • July, August and the Christmas–New Year fortnight sell out early in the best-value places. Book two or three months ahead for those dates.
  • In the quiet season (around January to March) some smaller hotels close for renovation — check that restaurants and dive centres near you will be open.
  • National park resorts are remote: check whether meals are included and what a transfer to Pemuteran village costs.
  • Many hotels arrange airport transfers and Menjangan trips — compare their prices with booking direct.

Where to stay: FAQs

Frequently asked questions

Is it better to stay in Pemuteran or near Menjangan?

Pemuteran for restaurants, beach snorkelling and village life; the national park side for seclusion and the shortest boat ride to the island. Menjangan trips pick up from Pemuteran anyway, so the village is the more practical base for most visitors.

Which Pemuteran hotels are best for snorkelling?

The resorts in the middle of the bay, such as Taman Sari and Pondok Sari, sit right in front of the Biorock reef, so you can snorkel straight from the beach.

How much does a hotel in Pemuteran cost?

Homestays and guesthouses start from roughly US$25–40 a night, good beachfront resorts from around US$70–150, and private-pool villas and national park retreats from a few hundred dollars upwards in high season.

Is Pemuteran good for a honeymoon?

Yes — it is quiet, romantic and uncrowded. Choose a villa with a private pool, or one of the retreats on the Menjangan side for complete seclusion.

Should I split my stay with another part of Bali?

Usually, yes. Pemuteran pairs well with a few nights in Munduk or Ubud on the way, which also breaks up the long drive from the airport.
