Pemuteran Beach

A calm, dark-sand bay with the reef at your feet

Pemuteran sits on a wide, sheltered bay on Bali’s north-west coast, in the district of Gerokgak. Behind the village rise the dry, forested hills that run into West Bali National Park; in front, the Bali Sea is usually as flat as a lake, especially in the morning. Fishing boats with bamboo outriggers are pulled up on the sand, and the resorts sit low among gardens rather than towering over the beach.

The sand is grey-black and volcanic, and there is coral close to shore in places, so this is not a white-sand lounging beach. What makes it special is what is just offshore: the Biorock reef and the shallow statue garden, which you can reach with a mask and fins straight from the beach.

Top things to do at Pemuteran Beach

Snorkel from the sand

Swim out from the middle of the bay to the Biorock structures, marked by buoys. Morning is calmest; late afternoon has the best light on the coral.

Walk the beach at sunset

Stroll west along the bay as the sun drops behind the hills of the national park, past fishermen mending nets and the turtle hatchery. Several hotel restaurants put tables on the sand in the evening.

Climb to Pura Bukit Kursi

Early in the morning, walk up to the hilltop temple of Bukit Kursi behind the village for views over the bay to Menjangan and, on clear days, the volcanoes of Java.

Book the boat to Menjangan

Most Menjangan snorkelling and dive trips collect you from your hotel or leave from the beach here.

How to get to Pemuteran Beach

  • From Bali Airport: about 150–160 km and four to five hours by car. See our airport to Pemuteran guide.
  • From Lovina: around 50 km west along the coast road — about an hour.
  • From Gilimanuk (Java ferry): about 30 km east, 40–45 minutes by car.

Insider tips

  • Wear reef shoes to get in and out of the water; there are rocks, coral fragments and the odd sea urchin close to shore.
  • Never stand on the Biorock structures or the coral, and keep off the buoy lines — boats use the channels between them.
  • The beach is public, but the stretches in front of hotels are kept clean by them; be respectful of guests’ loungers.
  • Bring cash: small warungs along the main road are cheaper than hotel restaurants and many do not take cards.

Pemuteran Beach FAQs

Frequently asked questions

Is Pemuteran beach good for swimming?

The water is calm, warm and usually flat, but the sand is dark and there is coral in places close to shore. It is better for snorkelling than for lounging and paddling; wear reef shoes to get in.

Does Pemuteran have white sand?

No — the beach is grey-black volcanic sand. For white sand, take a boat to Menjangan Island, which has small pale beaches between the rocks.

Is Pemuteran beach crowded?

Rarely. Even in July and August it is far quieter than any beach in the south of Bali, and in the quiet season you may have long stretches to yourself.
