Dolphins leaping at sunrise near an outrigger boat off Lovina, North Bali

Lovina & the Dolphins

Dolphins at dawn off the north coast

Lovina is the name given to a string of beach villages — Kaliasem, Kalibukbuk, Anturan and others — along the north coast west of Singaraja, about an hour east of Pemuteran. It is North Bali’s main resort area: relaxed, with black-sand beaches, calm water and plenty of simple restaurants.

Lovina is best known for its dolphins. Every morning at first light, traditional outrigger boats (jukung) head out to find the pods of spinner dolphins that feed a few kilometres offshore. The sight of dolphins leaping at sunrise is memorable, though on busy days dozens of boats chase the same pod — choose an operator that keeps its distance.

Lovina & the Dolphins FAQs

Frequently asked questions

Can I see Lovina’s dolphins from Pemuteran?

Yes, but it means an early start: Lovina is about an hour away and boats leave around sunrise. Many visitors do it on the way to or from Pemuteran, or stay a night in Lovina.

Is the Lovina dolphin trip ethical?

It can be. The problem is crowding on busy days. Choose a small operator with good reviews that keeps a respectful distance, and do not ask the captain to chase the dolphins.

Can you swim with the dolphins at Lovina?

Some tours offer it, but approaching wild dolphins in the water stresses them. We recommend watching from the boat and snorkelling on the reef afterwards.
