The tall cascade of Gitgit waterfall surrounded by jungle, North Bali

Gitgit & Sekumpul Waterfalls

The great waterfalls of the north

The cool hills between Singaraja and the central lakes are laced with rivers that drop off the old volcanic slopes in spectacular waterfalls. Two are especially famous. Gitgit, on the main road south of Singaraja, is a single tall cascade in a jungle ravine, reached by a short walk and a few hundred steps.

Sekumpul, further east, is widely considered the most beautiful waterfall in Bali: a cluster of falls plunging side by side into a deep, green gorge. Getting to the bottom involves steep steps, a little scrambling and wading through a river, and local guides are generally required. Nearby, the twin Banyumala falls near Wanagiri are another favourite, with a pool you can swim in.

Gitgit & Sekumpul Waterfalls FAQs

Frequently asked questions

Which is better, Gitgit or Sekumpul?

Sekumpul is more spectacular but needs a steep hike and a guide. Gitgit is much easier and quick to visit on the way somewhere else.

Can I visit the waterfalls from Pemuteran in a day?

Yes. They are around two hours away; a day trip usually combines them with Lovina’s dolphins or the lake temple of Ulun Danu Bratan.

Can you swim at Sekumpul?

You can paddle in the pools at the bottom when the water is calm, but the currents at the base of the falls are strong. Banyumala is better for a proper swim.
